START TO SOLD: 3 TIPS FOR DESIGNING COSTCO PACKAGING

Time of Reading: 3 minutes

CASE STUDY: HOLIDAY GIFT PACKAGING ON A PALLET

The key to designing giftable packaging for Costco is to reduce cost as much as possible while still maintaining a beautiful, elusive, luxurious feeling. Based on my experiences with successfully designing packaging for Costco – like our project nicknamed Chocmod’s “TDF Tallbox” – these are 3 important things to keep in mind.

1. MINIMIZE EMBELLISHMENTS

Embellishments on packaging include elements like UV spot finish, gold foil or ribbons – pieces that can add a lot of cost. While these details create a premium feeling you want to be mindful of using them sparingly. When designing the TDF Tallbox – instead of covering the whole box with gold foil – we added a small touch which still makes it feel posh. Be value oriented by utilizing striking but less expensive design elements like bright colors and graphics to avoid costly print finishes.

2. REDUCE FREIGHT COSTS

Design your giftable packaging to ship flat which helps you save on shipping costs and storage space at your facility. The box design can either be built to ship in a collapsible state or created in pre-made parts to be constructed at your warehouse. The Chocmod box was designed with an auto bottom so that it easily pops open, then a small piece of material is inserted for structural integrity while the lid adds additional structure and strength. Avoid paying to ship air!

3. DESIGN WITH PALLET IN MIND

Costco has very specific pallet requirements so designing your packaging with the Costco pallet in mind is paramount. The goal is to optimize your product’s space on that pallet so you can minimize packing and shipping costs. This will also allow you to maximize the amount of units Costco can sell.

CONCLUSION

If you utilize these three steps, you should be able to maximize value for any product you’re designing for Costco. Below are some additional resources to help you successfully design packaging to be sold in Costco and many other retailers around the world.
